University-wide faculty interested in addressing student in-class tech device challenges and opportunities are encouraged to apply by April 20 deadline

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State University Libraries’ Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) is accepting applications from University-wide faculty through April 20 for its upcoming Technology Enhanced Learning Leaders (TELL) cohort.

As students increasingly rely on personal devices for learning, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies offer opportunities to foster active learning and collaboration but can also create technology barriers if not carefully implemented. To address these challenges and opportunities in higher education, TLT will host the next Technology Enhanced Learning Leaders cohort on May 11-12. The hybrid event will take place in the Dreamery on the ground floor of the Shields Building at Penn State’s University Park campus and online. Faculty members, instructors, graduate students, instructional designers, and production specialists from all Penn State campuses are invited to participate.

During the program, participants will develop skills to thoughtfully integrate technology into their teaching, with a focus on BYOD strategies that utilize students’ personal devices to create more engaging and accessible learning experiences.

The program covers key topics such as learning spaces, technology tools, BYOD policies in syllabi, digital fluency, technology assessments, and technology-based assignment design. Faculty will learn interactive teaching methods that encourage active learning, critical thinking, and collaboration while minimizing technology barriers. Participants will also explore how emerging tools like generative AI intersect with course design and student learning, including strategies for setting clear expectations and promoting responsible use.

Participants will receive personalized instructional design support and join a collaborative learning community. This interactive approach will help them align technology with course objectives and implement plans that enhance student engagement, learning outcomes, and academic performance.

The TELL program combines synchronous sessions with asynchronous activities, and a fully asynchronous version will soon be available through Penn State’s Learning Resources Network. The program benefits both educators and students by fostering more engaging and accessible learning experiences that prepare students with critical digital literacy and real-world problem-solving skills.

Applications close at 5 p.m. ET on Monday, April 20. Acceptance notifications will be sent during the week of April 20. Details and registration information are available on the TELL webpage. For more information, contact Marilyn Goodrich at [email protected] or Julie Meyer at [email protected].
