Fountain Square Construction Impacting Local Businesses

Trending 4 hours ago

Construction on Fountain Square's drainage system is currently causing closures on parts of Shelby Street and Virginia Avenue. Many businesses in the area worry that the months-long project could threaten their long-term survival. More details on the construction here.

Nick Detrich, owner of Magalena, located near Shelby Street and Morris Street in Fountain Square, opened his restaurant in 2024. He says the construction is directly affecting his business.

"It is a hassle for our guests to get here, that's probably the biggest way it's impacting us," Detrich said. "Not knowing what's going on day to day. Sometimes there will be a new pile of dirt right in front of the door. Other times, the sidewalk is barricaded, blocking access to the restaurant."

The project aims to address longstanding flooding issues in Fountain Square.

"Installing these large pipes beneath the road is a complex task," explained Kyle Bloyd from the Indianapolis Department of Public Works.

Bloyd noted that Phase 3 of the project involves shutting down Shelby Street, a key route into Fountain Square from the south.

Detrich also mentioned that deliveries to his restaurant have been disrupted.

"We receive between seven and a dozen deliveries weekly, and all the drivers are heavily impacted because traffic patterns change frequently, making it difficult for them to find us," he said.

Blake Peoples, who runs West Fork Social House just a few stores away, echoed similar concerns.

"We've definitely seen a significant drop in new customers," Peoples said.

Many businesses are now adopting creative strategies to attract customers despite the construction.

"We're increasing our social media presence, posting more photos, and organizing more events to give people reasons to visit Fountain Square," Peoples added.

Detrich acknowledged the challenges but remains hopeful.

"We've made some lighthearted appeals, but the situation is becoming more serious each week. There will likely be more urgent requests from us soon," he said.

Although the construction is far from complete, Detrich hopes to keep his business open through the process.

"I'm definitely worried. It would be great to make it to the end because the renderings I've seen look fantastic. Making the area more walkable would benefit all the businesses here, but getting there will involve a lot of pain and struggle," he said.

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works issued a statement Tuesday, confirming that construction is expected to finish by the end of 2026.

"Construction contractors are continuing work on the Fountain Square Drainage Improvements project. This impactful project is being coordinated extensively with utility groups, who are working ahead of construction crews.

Impacts to the area are being minimized by completing the construction in phases, which help keep as little of the roadway closed at once.

Despite a harsh winter, crews are still currently on schedule, with construction anticipated to wrap up in late 2026.

This project, originally initiated by area business owners and the City-County Council, will resolve historic flooding issues in the area.
