BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) -- More than $200,000 is headed to the Alliance for Manufacturing and Technology (AMT) to help local manufacturers adopt artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies.
The $205,000 grant comes from the Appalachian Regional Commission, an organization that promotes economic and social growth.
The funding will support a partnership between AMT, Binghamton University, SUNY Broome Community College and local county economic development organizations.
The goal is to help educate businesses on how to use artificial intelligence.
The funding will allow AMT to train companies on how to adopt smart technology in robotics, AI and data-driven process tools.
Leaders say they are eager to begin implementing the program.
“Part of the funding that we’re talking about will help us train and implement different AI practices with small and mid-size manufacturers so that they can become more profitable and more effective,” said Principal Consultant at AMT, Amanda Jackson. “We really like things like AI and some of the latest software and technology that have come out because that’s kind of the great equalizer.”
AMT works with companies across the country looking for ways to incorporate AI, with a focus on supporting small and mid-sized manufacturers in the Southern Tier.
“We’re very aware of the requirements that we need to meet and also the security that is involved with AI,” said Executive Director at AMT Carol Miller. “We help companies develop policies for how they’re going to use AI so they can keep their intellectual property and sensitive business information private.”
Leaders say the funding will help remove barriers that often prevent smaller companies from accessing training and consulting services.
“These kinds of projects are really interesting and helpful for manufacturers,” Jackson said. “A lot of time they put off doing some of these types of projects because the training or consulting can be out of reach, so this is really a great opportunity for small- and mid-size manufacturers to become even more competitive.”
U.S. Rep. Josh Riley helped AMT secure the grant by signing a letter of support.
